The "Simple" Feeling

Actualizată în: 6 mai 2020

I was standing on the porch at home and I was thinking "Nothing compares to the feeling of being home, with your loved ones." Then I realized that no feeling compares to the other. There is a certain state for when you hug someone, a certain state for when you ride a bike, a certain feeling when you see a sunrise etc. Can you imagine how many feelings we feel in a lifetime?

I started to analyze this thought, about tons of states and feelings and I came to the idea that we do things without really feeling them.

Take a simple day for example: you wake up thinking about making some coffee, you drink coffee thinking about what to wear, you dress up thinking what are your plans for the day, you do your plans for the day thinking about what movie to watch in the evening. But you never really feel any of these, you are not really into them.

You say you drank coffee in your life, but did you really, completely dedicated yourself for those few minutes to the coffee? Today I decided to truly feel life. For an entire day. Let's take this coffee moment.

How-to-drink-your-coffee Guide

1. Use your 5 senses

  • Feel the cup in your hands, the warmness on your fingers. Feel your body, scan it. Become aware of your head, neck, chest, abdomen, legs, arms. Take all the time you need for each one.

  • Bring your nose near the coffee, feel the specific smell. Maybe think about the people that made it and where it comes from.

  • Hear the sounds around you. The quietness of the morning, a few birds that are starting to chirp. Take a moment for each sound.

  • See the coffee, it's color, it's waves in the cup. Is it darker or whiter because you use milk?

  • Keeping in yourself all these 4 information about the world, now taste. Feel coffee's taste, it's temperature, feel the nature of the liquid on your tongue.

2. Don't do more things at once

For a moment in your day, just do one think completely. Make that coffee cup your entire world for a few minutes. Nothing else matters, than the cup. And you can do this with every simple activity from your routine.

3. Meditation

And by meditation I don't mean staying in a weird position, saying "Om" for hours. I mean being present, aware of you.

Have you ever felt your breathing? Close your eyes for a few minutes and let's feel our breaths. Just feel when you inhale, when you exhale. Make the inhalation and exhalation be conscious, know when you are doing them. Focus on the breath. Inhale, exhale... If thoughts come up in your mind, gently invite them out and focus again on the breathing. Observe the space, the gap between inhalation and exhalation and rest in that space. Open your eyes.

After this, you get the "Simple" Feeling, how I call it. It is a combination between calmness, peacefulness, and the knowing that you have enough. I love this feeling! I could just stay in front of a doctor's cabinet and wait for 3 hours and just enjoy that feeling, having no problem waiting.

I challenge you, I invite you to have this "Simple" Feeling by using all your senses in a simple activity. I invite you to really feel your life, reduce it sometimes to a calm, happy, simplicity.

I won't tell you what you feel after you have a few moments of simplicity, just do it, enjoy your life from the moment you wake up and feel your pajamas on you, to the moment of savoring a delicious meal and drinking a cup of wine in the evening.
